Current recommended USB DVB-S2 tuners please?

My trusty Tevii S660 seems to have stopped working. (This may or may not be due to me upgrading the very old version of Fedora Linux on my system.) So I am looking for recommendations for USB DVB-S2 devices which work well with the current/latest tvheadend please.

Anyone have a recommendation?

If it was an in-place upgrade, do you need to update your driver firmware?
If it was a start-again upgrade, did you copy the driver firmware files to the new system?

It might be an idea to tell people what hardware you intend to connect this tuner to. Are you looking for a USB tuner, a PCIe tuner, a Sat/IP tuner etc,etc. The more detail you provide the better.

If I was to suggest a DVBS2 tuner I’d choose a Sat/IP tuner like this

No need to worry about drivers breaking on kernel upgrades or finding working firmware. It’s a simple plug and play unit and works perfectly in TVH. TVH will automatically discover it once it is connected to the same network as the RPI and can be used on any other equipment attached to the network too. It’s available to purchase on Amazon too.

Thanks for the responses and recommendations. Sorry I should have made it more clear that I'm looking for a USB tuner to connect to a very small PC that has no free PCIe slots.

It was an in-place upgrade - several in fact, from Fedora 30 all the way up to 39. I'm pretty sure I updated the firmware but I will double-check that. The Tevii device seems to work for a while but then locks up and needs to be power cycled. I don't know if it's the newer OS or the newer tvheadend that might be causing the issue. I could try and run the old version of tvh maybe.

Jon M that’s why I suggested a Sat/IP DVBS2 tuner. You won’t have to worry about OS versions or kernel updates or firmware.

You could spend hours trying to troubleshoot your issues without success and you’ll need someone with access to a similar tuner and access to DVBS2 satellite reception to go through the process with you.

I’ve suggested a tuner that will take all the headaches out of configuring TVH, is reasonably priced and will work flawlessly. It’s entirely up to you now.

i copy the firmware files to following destination:

/usr/lib/firmware

Afterwards its need to reboot your machine

If you need the firmware files please let me know I can upload the files.

Looks like there is another company, Nedis, planning on taking over the products. I would wait though to see how it plays out, otherwise you might end up with a product with no support.

Someone gave a heads up in the Kodi forum a while back about the product being discontinued. They were so cheap I bought four of them. Wise move by the looks of it.

With the proliferation of IPTV and local DVBT broadcasts and a downturn in DVBS I can’t see too many companies investing any further resources into the development of DVBS units.

Seems domestic satellite broadcasting is heading the way of the dinosaurs.

I use a PCTV 491e USB tuner on a Raspberry Pi 4, with firmware file /usr/lib/firmware/dvb-demod-m88ds3103.fw or dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw
(one is for my WInTV Nova DVB-T2 tuner and one is for the PCTV 491e DVB-S2 tuner, and I forget which is which).

This works perfectly when configured as a universal LNB in Configuration | DVB Input | TV Adaptors

The driver is special and does not need to be compiled on any system. Kernel version independent.

Installation works like this on most linux systems:

Synology has a Synology Package, OpenElec a sundtek plugin, QNAP a QNAP Package for installing the driver since the filesystem structure is a little bit different.

Something to bear in mind.
I was looking at USB tuners as an alternative to my current setup and noticed many didn't support Diseqc 1.3 (required for USALS), or at the very least didn't mention it.

Sending any kind of diseqc commands is no problem with those tuners, also rotors are no problem.

I think the biggest problem of old USB DVB-S2 designs for rotors is the LNB design which sometimes was done with simple step-up converters rather than dedicated lnb chipsets which perform much better and offer more options.
