I Need Some Help with Setting Up DVR Recording in Tvheadend!

Hi everyone,

I am new to Tvheadend and could use some guidance on setting up DVR recordings. I have got Tvheadend running on my server and it’s working well for live TV but I am struggling a bit with the DVR scheduling. Here are a few specific questions I have:

Recording Overlapping Shows: If two shows overlap slightly, is there a way to set Tvheadend to handle the overlap without missing the beginning or end of either show: ??

Managing Storage Space: Any tips on configuring Tvheadend to delete older recordings automatically to save space: ??

Best Formats for Compatibility: I have seen several recording format options..; which one works best for compatibility with streaming to different devices: ??

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help and apologies if these are newbie questions.....just trying to get a solid setup here !! If the two shows are on the same multiplex, or if you have more than one tuner able to record both shows, this will be handled automatically.

In Configuration -> Recording -> Filesystem Settings there is an option "Maintain free storage space in MiB" which may do what you want though I have never tried it and the online help doesn't explain how it handles a shortage of disk space.

You didn't say what hardware you have. In addition to what @davep says, I think most people just allocate/buy enough storage for their needs so that they don't run out of it 🙂
