How to install?

Hi,

being a newbie on Linux, I tried installing TVheadend with this from the docs area.

DEB Packages (Debian, Ubuntu, RaspiOS)

Run the following shell command to setup a local apt repo:

curl -1sLf 'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/tvheadend/tvheadend/setup.deb.sh' | sudo -E bas
It went all the way and said ready to rock.

Trying to access TVheadend through IP Adress and port didn't work. I even think it didn't install properly as I can't find any folders. Maybe it just doesn't start.

What can I do? Would appreciate your help.
Running Linux Mint 21.3 on a AMD Ryzen 5 2600.

hhipp Did you actually install Tvheadend or just the repository?

My best solution would be

sudo -s
add-apt-repository ppa:mamarley/tvheadend-git
apt update
apt-get install tvheadend

Agree, this is a different one. Though I think, one more in the standard line of *buntu. Ought to be more simple for the newbie.

If it runs, can easily be checked with

$ ps ax | grep tvheadend
   8057 ?        Ssl  104:09 /usr/bin/tvheadend -f -p /run/tvheadend.pid -u hts -g video -6

Should look something like this.

Digard Keep in mind, that when running modified versions bugs should either be reported to the maintainers of those versions, or it should be reproduced on an unmodified build.

Flole After running the first line I thought to have installed it.
As it didn't work, I thought maybe it is not installed.
But how to actually install it?
I searched the web but couldn't find the right line.
So I came here.

Maybe the question should be, did you run
sudo apt install tvheadend.

From your original post you got to the point of adding the repository where the package is stored and which clearly won’t install TVH and I don’t recall any message along the lines of
“Ready to rock either”.

You’ll actually see TVH being installed in the Terminal during the process. It really doesn’t get any easier than that

It's there - the last line of tvheadend-tvheadend_rpm.sh is echo_okfail_rc "0" "The repository has been installed successfully - You're ready to rock!"

But I have to say that if I was a noob I'd find the instructions very confusing 🙁 The INSTALLATION section doesn't appear to contain any actual installation instructions! In the Linux section it has instructions for setting up repos but nothing at all about how to actually install TVH. Not even a mention that you need to do it. Certainly no mention of how.

Jonas Lang There was some kind of instruction. I did follow it.
I supposed that would do the trick.

Can only agree. Unfortunately, it seems a common problem with FOSS-software these days, that - as helpful as the people may be, and here they are most helpful, thanks a lot! - projects seem to be seen from the perspective of the insider.
As a newbie here, I ran into similar stuff (Forbidden, no scan, installation, ... ). Without perseverance, I wouldn't have managed.
For those involved, sometimes it seems to be forgotten, that there are plenty of potential users out there, who simply want to install, apt...something, and run a software. Not recompile, debug symbols, whatnot. Just fire and forget.

Therefore my suggestion of further up, which is still somewhat difficult to the non-*nix user, but doable.

Flole Just for fun I tried this:

curl -1sLf 'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/tvheadend/tvheadend/setup.deb.sh' | sudo -E bash

and that:

apt install tvheadend

And I got this:
E: Paket tvheadend kann nicht gefunden werden.

hhipp 1. You add the repository where the package is stored. 2. You update your system to reflect this. 3. You run the install command to actually install TVH. There’s no tricks or hidden methods or wizardry behind this.

hhipp just to put an end to this circular discussion and constant tagging.

This is a repository maintained by Michael Marley a regular and trusted contributor to the TVH project. Assuming you are using Ubuntu 22.04 or greater and if you’re not I suggest you do. Follow these simple instructions and you’ll have TVH up and running.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mamarley/tvheadend-git
sudo apt update
sudo apt install tvheadend

Been there, done it, several weeks ago. Until the Sundtek support pointed out the method as above.

Linux definitely is not as long as you know the commands. Knowing the commands is the trick.
And as nobody was born with this knowledge, you have to learn it.

So teach me:
What are the commands that are needed for your three steps?
