Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner

Added by Stephen Neal almost 5 years ago

Hi all

This looks like it could be very good value if Open Source drivers appear for it : http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-one/accessories/digital-tv-tuner#fbid=1ui_UaaGUzy GBP£25/EUR€30 for a DVB-T/T2/C USB tuner for use with the Microsoft Xbox One (but like the Sony Play TV presumably usable on any PC platform if Linux drivers appear)

@C vH
So I downloaded the New Image.
The Driver seems to be better because I have 2 Tuners now. DVB-C & DVB-T
I searched on DVB-C but again. No Services found.
Tried an other Stick and here I found all the Services.
When I trie to use booth the XBOX Stick didn't work. The Hauppauge work fine.

If you need something tell me I´ll post all u need.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Stephen Neal about 2 years ago

Yep - I can't get the LibreElec buld from C vH to work with my XBox One tuner either - but my home compiled version of TV Headend only running on Jessie Lite with drivers compiled as above works fine. (Literally swapped the uSD cards out to check)

@Stephen Neal,
on the Raspberry Pi3? Can you share it?

I posted instructions earlier in this thread.

(This is purely for a TV Headend backend - not running LibreElec or Kodi front end)

@Stephen Neal

did all you said and after 4 hours. Didn't work. Nice try.

So my last hope depends on C vH and his Image.
Sad why is it not possible to just use the driver.....

Olli Salonen wrote:

Thanks CvH, I was planning to, but now I don't have to. Will you compile it for x86 as well please? :)

Andras, ok, there's not much we can do then, except start to guess which registers to change but that's a neverending task. I'll do that power level thing a bit later, the next couple of weeks I'm very little in front of my PC...

I have another plan. One of my colleague has an Xbox one, I have a tuner and a i2c sniffer, so next week I am going to sniff the i2c communication between the demodulator ic and the tuner with an Xbox. I tried it, the method is working with the linux driver, I can see what control datas the tuner get, so the next step is the same but with an Xbox.

did all you said and after 4 hours. Didn't work. Nice try.

So my last hope depends on C vH and his Image.
Sad why is it not possible to just use the driver.....

Did you definitely install the kernel headers on a fresh Jessie Lite install?

Stephen Neal wrote:

maybe make install is missing, his log shows some different media_build version

#install base system
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install raspberrypi-kernel-headers make gcc git patch patchutils libproc-processtable-perl

#clone git
cd
git clone git://linuxtv.org/media_build.git
git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/trsqr/media_tree.git -b xboxone ./media

#build media_build
cd media_build
make dir DIR=../media
make distclean
make

#install it
sudo make install

#download the needed fws
cd /lib/firmware
sudo wget http://linuxtv.org/downloads/firmware/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw
sudo wget http://palosaari.fi/linux/v4l-dvb/firmware/MN88472/02/latest/dvb-demod-mn88472-02.fw

reboot

that worked for me at a fresh new raspbian (iirc)

Btw guys, even if it's obvious, there are 2 types of Xbox One USB Tuners.

- Haupauge DVB-S ATSC for the US region
- NXP DVB-T/DVB-T2/DVB-C

Just making sure you all know :P

Yep - this thread is purely for the DVB-T/T2/C one (as per thread title)

But surely the US XBox One tuner is ATSC 8VSB (i.e. the US OTA Digital Terrestrial standard) not DVB-S (the satellite standard)?

@Andras

That sounds great! Will be interesting to compare the problematic frequencies. First question of course is, will you be able to watch all the channels problem-free using the Xbox itself? Then if yes, we should focus on the I2C communication.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Walter av about 2 years ago

@Stephen Neal

Compiling and testing DVB-T on rpi3 succeeded on kernel 4.9.40-v7+, however I used a updated kernel (rpi-update and possible a bad usb media) in the first place that might break things. To let it compile with a updated kernel I had to add extra packages to fix the updated kernel sources/headers which needs to be added manually by rpi-source:

#update base image
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install raspberrypi-kernel-headers make gcc git patch patchutils libproc-processtable-perl firmware-linux-nonfree bc libncurses5-dev libdigest-sha-perl

#incase of upgrading the kernel 4.9.40-v7+!!!
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo rpi-update
sudo wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/notro/rpi-source/master/rpi-source -O /usr/bin/rpi-source && sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-source && /usr/bin/rpi-source -q --tag-update
rpi-source #this will get modified+ kernel sources and headers
sudo reboot

#!!!make sure you are currently running the kernel as you would like to build these modules for, otherwise reboot first!!!

Did you definitely install the kernel headers on a fresh Jessie Lite install?

maybe make install is missing, his log shows some different media_build version

#clone git

sudo wget http://palosaari.fi/linux/v4l-dvb/firmware/MN88472/02/latest/dvb-demod-mn88472-02.fw

reboot

that worked for me at a fresh new raspbian (iirc)

I did exactly this. and yeah it worked. First step done to my headless tv server.
Next I´ll try your Image until I get a new raspberry.

RPi2/3 image http://cvh.libreelec.tv/Test/xbox/

LibreELEC-RPi2.arm-8.1-xbox-dvb-driver-mb-1.2.img.gz

looks now working for me :)

Working for me in the UK from Crystal Palace - all 9 muxes working fine. (6 x DVB-T and 3 x DVB-T2)

After a little while of testing a 4x XBox One tuner DVB-C setup I have noticed that there are definitely some signal issues with this tuner.

They don't perform anywhere near as well as an Astrometa MN88473 based tuner. Regular pixelisation.

I've tried adding a powered amplifier but I know if you're boosting a poor signal it often makes it worse, but I also don't think it's a poor signal in the first place (or certainly not too bad).

I also saw yesterday when TVH tried to do an epggrab on 3 tuners, whilst I was watching TV through another, the signal went through the floor with many errors. But strangely only on one mux - muxes either side were as before, very odd.

Maybe I need a better quality signal splitter, or to change how I route the cable to the tuners - currently using some screw on gender changers which I know aren't too great.

After testing the Image from C vH I must say it is the beste Libreelec that I ever use.
It all worked so fine both tuners work great and can record one channel and watch another. Never experience this. Now we need PiP in Kodi :)
i´m very pleased.

I have the original Astrometa (MN88472) and experienced the same problem on DVB-T again with only one mux - the strongest one of all. Now here's the interesting thing, both xbox tuners are connected to the same powered splitter using quality cables (with another 4+ tuners, all fine). The one (xbox tuner, using a cable that was made) is fine, the other with a high quality (sealed) cable glitched like hell, I switched it out with a cheapo poundland cable, and guess what, it's fine!

Make of that what you will.. (yes, I checked the cables were all connected correctly many times).

I have a Mac
i have VirtualBox and Ubuntu Server.

But I can't find a tutorial on how to change the Software

It is pretty easy AFTER you understood how it works, before it is not that easy ;)
