I'd like to give you an early look at a small project I've been working on: TVHarbor.
TVHarbor is a standalone desktop client for TVHeadend with an integrated VLC-based player. The goal is to provide a clean desktop application for Live TV, EPG and recording management without constantly switching between different applications or the TVHeadend web interface.
The application is still in its testing phase, but it is already running absolutely stable in my daily use and has grown far beyond being just a simple TVH stream player.
Some of the features already implemented:
- Live TV with channel list, channel logos, current and next programme information
- Integrated VLC player including fullscreen, volume control and mute
- EPG / programme guide with current and upcoming programmes
- Schedule recordings directly from the EPG
- Manage scheduled, active, completed and failed recordings
- Play completed recordings directly within TVHarbor
- Stop active recordings and delete recordings
- Multiple TVHeadend server profiles
- Search and filtering for channels and recordings
- Dark and light themes
- Various settings such as EPG refresh interval, recording pre/post padding and startup volume
TVHarbor is available for Windows (x64) with the required VLC runtime bundled with the application, so a separate VLC installation is not required. Linux is also available with macOS planned as well.
The GitHub repository will remain private during the beta phase. I haven't made a final decision yet on whether TVHarbor will eventually become fully open source. One reason for this is the increasing amount of source code – and sometimes even entire projects – being copied and republished under different names.
For now, my focus is on further testing TVHarbor, ironing out the remaining rough edges, and also finding out how much interest there actually is in a standalone TVHeadend desktop client like this.
