I have been using TVHeadend for years with a internal tuner in an old PC. Recently I thought the tuner had died (it was my LNB on my dish) and I ordered a USB tuner with a view to retiring the PC at some point.

I've tried to get the new tuner (Hauppauge WinTV Nova HD USB version) working with LibreElec 12.01 (based on Kodi 21.1) and TVHeadend 4.3 on a Pi3 however the tuner isn't detected.

Is this a known issue? Suggestions?

TVH can only see the tuners that the Linux operating system makes available to it.

I suggest that you ask your question on the LibreELEC forum. Perhaps LE does not have drivers for that device. Perhaps the Raspberry Pi can not provide enough power for that device.

Harmless Drudge there’s very little support for DVBS tuners in LE these days mainly because of the driver breakage on every kernel update. You could try reading through this to give you an idea what you will need to do to achieve support for your DVBS USB tuner. b-rad-NDi/Ubuntu-media-tree-kernel-builder

I always suggest that the buyer researches first before buying the hardware. Basically you need something that works out of the box otherwise you’ll have to compile your own drivers. Definitely not recommended for a novice.

You could possibly get it working on TVH on an RPI4 under Ubuntu and use full Kodi.

I saw that thread and it was why I thought I'd try a post here. I've got a Pi4 and have previously used Ubuntu and Kodi. I didn't buy the new tuner in the specific and exclusive expectation that it would work with an RPi3. I did so in the expectation that sooner or later my 2007 desktop PC would eventually be retired and that an external tuner would provide more flexibility in future -- with an SBC or mini PC.

Overall I found LibreElec less prone to breakage than Kodi, which is why I switched some years ago. I don't mind switching a device (intended for guest accommodation) to Kodi if necessary -- I'll review the tree kernel builder info and decide. Thanks for the pointer.
