Under XBMCBuntu Eden (+ pulse PVR), I used to experience some macroblocking when playing HD Live TV or some 1080p .ts files recorded using TvHeadend on the French TV (DVB-T). My video card is a GeForce 9600 GT.
Updating the nvidia drivers from 280.13-0ubuntu6.1 to 295.53-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 solved these problems. Hope this helps.
After reading some posts, I used the X-Swat repository to upgrade:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
