Capture card recommendations for Linux based computers.

Hi everyones!

I have a question, which PCIe capture card is recommended for use with Ubuntu server based computer? I had a Hauppauge analog TV tuner but unfortunately only the composite/svideo inputs are detected by the web interface of Tvheadend. Anyway I didn't have analog cable anymore, I got satellite TV instead so it's for that reason I need a new capture card with HD capability.

Is the Hauppauge Colossus 2 models 1577 can work with Linux? Or I should use another model or completely another brand?

Also the reason of using a CLI OS instead a GUI one it’s because I will just need to use the web interface set the recording path to a network share who will be on another machine who contain multiples hard drives so 1U chassis will can be used for machines with the capture card in that way I will be able to set up a bunch of 1U machines in a rack who records from a bunch of satellite box and save their recordings on a central machine with space for many drives such a 2U chassis.

Guillaume, why a capture card? I believe the way to go is SAT>IP such as the IDL400s, no requirement to colocate. bonne chance...Strebor

I do a search for the IDL400s and if I correctly understand what I read, do I need to plug the outside dish to this device? It's look good but I know satellite provider here such Bell Canada need the customer use a receiver provided by them. 3rd party devices seem to be not allowed.

Something like the http://www.magewell.com/usb-capture-hdmi and minisatip to serve it up to tvheadend peut-être.

I,m way out of my depth with this, I'm fortunate to have DVBs to play with. Other forum member please dig me out of this hole!!!!

Not sure this'll be of any help, but I wanted to capture & stream another STB across my network. I looked high & low for a device that could do what I wanted, sadly they're all far too expensive or required Windows. I eventually found the HS602-T device that's branded under a number of different brand names (often at stupidly expensive prices). Here in the UK it's branded as the "'Maplin Game Capture Pro HD' sold by Maplin"

I did a bit of research on the box & it appeared do everything I needed but like all the rest it apparently needed Windows & only streamed in 720p.. I bought one anyway, but couldn't get the software to install on Windows, so sent it back and looked for more. But the damn thing kept coming up time & time again.

I then stumbled upon "this thread on xda-developers" which as you can see explains that the box has an open telnet port! So purchased another from ebay & began messing with it & eventually figured out how to stream over the network!

Thanks for theses information, its very interesting.

Its just because I absolutely need an PCIe card because the recorders will be placed in a rack in 1U servers chassis and I can’t have USB dongles who hangs everywhere in the setup…

So I remember I have opened a subject in this forums during summer 2016 about the recordings from my ex-analog cable provider who won’t work with Tvheadend since analog cable is a type of sources who is not supported by Tvheadend. But I remember in the web interface of Tvheadend I was able to see the Composite and S-Video sources of the Hauppauge analog TV tuner PCIe card.

So if I buy from Hauppauge the Colossus 2 PCIe capture card, theoretically I should be able to see his YPbPr (recordings from HDMI on Bell Canada satellite box is not allowed) input and I will be able to setup recordings by example: 0:00:00 to 23:59:59 with a repeat every days and save the recordings in a video container such a .mkv file and set the recording path to a remote server (on our local network) by mounting an FTP site with CurlFTPfs?

Yes, you can then either install tvheadend 3.4 or use ffmpeg & pipe it as an mpegts source into tvheadend 4.1.

Hi Mark,

The best thing I can do is to use my old Hauppauge HVR-1265 who I was used it for analog cable recording with Windumps but with no success with Tvheadend on Linux. I know the composite input who was recognized by Tvheadend when I try to get the analog cable working and by doing so I will be able to see if it can works that way if yes, then I will brought the capture card with HD inputs such YPbPr because Bell Canada's satellite setup box cannot be recorded by HDMI due to restrictions enforced by them. But with YPbPr its analog so it will not causing issues since there no "restriction signal" who is sent trough the cables.

I will gave some news for telling if it works or not in that way.

I got what you can see in the screen shot #2.

What I should do for getting my PCIe tuner inputs into the web GUI?
