HP N54L G7 running xpenology (or unRaid) + Plex + TVheadend + Oscam + SAT>IP ?

Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum, and must admit that I am in for a steep learning curve here ;o). I am running a Plex server (Win7 on VMware ESX 4.1), and have my old Dreambox PVR-600. The two are not connected in any way. My DM-600 is hooked up to a PC where I run OSCAM, and have my Smargo card readers there as well. (I'm using this setup because DM-600 has only one CI).

My very first attempts to stream from my DM-600 to the network was with VLC. But as you all know, this combination is giving very little flexibility and not exactly the worlds most user friendly UI. Our friends over at Plex are tinkering on a plugin for Enigma2, and from what I read they are getting there.

Other then that I watch satellite TV on my iPad with an app that connects to my DM-600. (handy for when the wife and I want to see TV in bed :o) )

With Plex I managed to get a pretty decent solution for streaming movies and TV shows to all devices in our house. I'm happy, and the kids are happy :o). So the next step would be the satellite TV. From my point of view this is only interesting if multiple users can watch different channels simultaneously. So my DM-600 won't do. I've been looking at the ReelBox, but even if this looks like a solid solution, I am afraid integration with Plex (and streaming over IP) won't be that easy.

In the last years I have been following the SAT>IP technology evolution. Nice to see that this topic also has found its way to this forum.

I just bought an HP N54L. The intention was to use it as a straight forward NAS and store my Plex media on it. But the more I started digging, the more possibilities I found. So far it looks like this could be a viable solution for setting up a new Plex server (+ Sickbeard and stuff). I am not to worried about the transcoding limitations because of the processor. Max 720p is good enough for me. And here is my chance to add DVB-S to the mix. Just imaging if I could run TVheadend + oscam on the same hardware... maybe with 4 tuners?

One of the things that is puzzling me as I am writing this, is the SAT>IP concept. It converts the coaxial signal to IP to I can get it over the network. But you will be needing a client with SAT>IP firmware. So how does this fit in with TVheadend? How will the setup be: LNB > SAT>IP server > Router > TVheadend > ??? > Plex-client

Do I need SAT>IP ? If I have LNB > TVheadend > Plex > Plex-client ? Advantages / disadvantages ?

I would love to hear from you if you have or are planning the same type of setup. I'm ready for the ride of my life ;o)

Welcome to tvHeadend!
I'm relatively new to tvHeadend and Sat>IP myself, but I believe we do want the same end result.
tvHeadend will act as the receiver of the Sat>IP traffic from your Sat>IP server because it wants to record and decrypt the signal using oscam.

And tvHeadend will distribute this in your network unencrypted to clients such as XBMC or apps on your devices.

YOu don't need Sat>IP if you put in a tuner card in your N54L and make it work.
Im not sure how mature the tvHeadend channel in Plex is, but you could go to XBMC for (better) support.

It describes the unlikelihood of mixing SAT>IP and Oscam, plus the fact that you don't have a SAT>IP that manages to connect with the same protocol as the server.

So until further notice I guess SAT>IP is out of the picture for me, unless somebody can tell me otherwise ;) .

I need to do some reading on the tuner subject. Like: What can I achieve with one tuner to start with? How many channels can I get in? Are there any limitations on the number of transponders?

Last time I checked with the ReelBox support people, it had something to do with "all channels on one transponder", something with a question related to multicasting... Anyone that can give me a hint please?
